Guidelines

All submissions should be sent by email to hullwrites@gmail.com on, or before, the closing date of 28th March 2025, 11:59pm.

Please format the subject line as: "Night and Day" - Submission - Your Name.

How to submit

The team at HU Writes are very keen to see all your creative work! To ensure that we are able to consider your piece for publication, please read the following guidelines carefully.

  • We only accept submissions from students, staff, and alumni of the University of Hull. In the case of a high volume of submissions, current students will be prioritised.

  • All submissions should be relevant to the theme of "Night and Day".

  • You may submit up to three pieces, but please indicate in your email which you would like us to prioritise in the event we cannot publish them all.

  • We only accept work that has not been previously published in another magazine.

  • No copyright infringement. All work should be wholly your own, and we will not accept the use of A.I.

  • Please clearly title your piece and proofread for spelling/grammatical errors BEFORE submitting.

  • We accept prose, poetry, monologues, script, and non-fiction.

Formatting

For all prose and non-fiction work, use the following:

  • Submit as a Word Document

  • Use the font "Times New Roman" in size 12

  • Double spaced paragraphs with each new line indented

  • Maximum of 1,000 words

For poetry submissions, we will accept a maximum of 40 lines

For all scripts, use the following:

  • Submit as a Word Document

  • Use the font "Courier" in size 12

  • Single spaced

  • Maximum of five pages

Additional Considerations

For non-fiction pieces, please ensure any information is obtained through a reliable source. When writing about real events/people, consider ethics. Once a piece is published, it is available for everyone to read, so you may wish to gather consent where necessary.

If you have any questions, please send us an email, and the team will be more than happy to help you.
