Submission Guidelines

How to submit

The team at Document 1 are very keen to see all your creative work! To ensure that we are able to consider your piece for publication, please read the following guidelines carefully.

  • We only accept submissions from students, staff, and alumni of the University of Hull. In the case of a high volume of submissions, current students will be prioritised.

  • All submissions should be relevant to the theme ‘Deception and Betrayal’.

  • You may submit up to three pieces. Please indicate in your email how you would like us to prioritise the pieces in the event that we are unable to publish them all.

  • We can only accept work that has not been previously published in another magazine.

  • No copyright infringement - all work should be wholly your own. We will also not accept AI generated work.

  • Please clearly title your piece and proofread for spelling/grammatical errors before submitting.

  • We accept prose, poetry, monologues, non-fiction, and visual art.

Formatting

For all written submissions, please use the formatting guidance below:-

  • Submit as a Word Document

  • Use a clear font such as Times New Roman in size 12

  • Double-spaced paragraphs (if writing prose, the first line of each new section is not indented but each subsequent paragraph is - take a look in your nearest novel and see how the paragraphs are laid out if you are uncertain!)

  • Maximum 1,000 words for prose/non-fiction/monologues. Maximum 40 lines for poetry.

For visual art submissions, please use the formatting guidance below:-

  • Submit in a high resolution

  • Use a JPEG or PNG format

Additional considerations

For non-fiction pieces, please ensure any information is obtained through a reliable source. When writing about real events/people, consider ethics. Once a piece is published, it is open for anybody to read. You may wish to gain consent from people you write about, or use alternative names.

Tips!

Each year Document 1 receives a high volume of submissions, often meaning we are unable to publish everybody. To give your work the best chance of being featured, consider the following aspects of your writing.

  • Rhythm. Have you varied your sentences?

  • Character. Do you have strong characters with a clear purpose in your narrative?

  • Style. Does your piece reflect your authorial style?

  • Story. Have you told a compelling story? Is the content engaging?

  • Have you followed the formatting guidelines correctly BEFORE submitting?

We highly encourage taking a look at previous editions of our magazine to see the type of writing we publish!

If you have any questions or enquiries about these guidelines, please contact the team and we’ll be happy to assist!

Send your submission as an attachment to our email address hullwrites@gmail.com on or before 11:59pm on 29th November 2024. Please format the subject line like so 'Deception and Betrayal – Submission – your name’. Example: ‘Deception and Betrayal – Submission – John Smith’

We can’t wait to read/see your work! Thank you for reading 😊
